“It can also be used at home at moments that trigger memories of traumatic experiences.”
Within our organisation we use the Psylaris VR headsets, mainly for EMDR-VR, EMDR-Remote and the Relaxation module, and to a lesser extent for Exposure. As an applied psychologist, and with personal experience working with EMDR-VR, I support both clients and therapists in trajectories where the headset is used alongside regular face-to-face sessions.
I provide colleagues with guidance on what matters when using VR at home: safety for the client, agreements about contact after sessions, and discussing results via the dashboard. Clients who consider using EMDR-VR at home receive detailed information about the advantages and limitations, what they can expect and how to plan sessions in a way that matches their capacity. We also discuss which distraction techniques may help and how they can use the relaxation module after each session.
Clients receive a manual after the conversation, and if needed we create a plan together that we adjust along the way. For therapists this guidance is valuable, especially when they are using the headset for the first time in trauma treatment. For clients it is reassuring to hear how others have experienced it.
When a client is able to complete sessions independently, EMDR-VR at home becomes a meaningful addition. It can speed up the treatment process, offer more space to work on triggers within the same timeframe, and allows sessions to happen exactly at the moments when traumatic memories surface. This way, clients can work on recovery in their own environment, at the moments that matter most.
