If you have a post-traumatic stress disorder and are not functioning well, EMDR may be the solution. EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, helps you process traumatic events from the past. But are the costs for EMDR reimbursed by your health insurance company?

EMDR falls under the basic mental healthcare (GGZ). The basic insurance reimburses the costs in full. In order to get EMDR therapy reimbursed, insurance companies require a post-traumatic stress syndrome. For this, you need a referral from your general practitioner.

There is no statutory personal contribution for the reimbursement of EMDR therapy.

Do I need permission from my insurer?
In order to be reimbursed for EMDR To be eligible, you need a referral from your GP. Furthermore, you do not usually need permission from your health insurer. Please note that your insurer will not reimburse the full costs if you do not have a reimbursement policy and choose a non-contracted supplier.

Reimbursement of EMDR and own contribution
The costs of EMDR are charged to the excess of your insurance policy. If you have not yet used up your excess in this calendar year, you will have to pay (part of) the costs yourself.
