Borderline personality disorder

Borderline is a very difficult personality disorder, both for the person suffering from it and for those around him or her. At one moment there seems to be nothing wrong, and the next moment you react extremely emotionally and without knowing why. With borderline you actually have two personalities and this is very confusing for you and those around you. It is very difficult for someone with borderline to form relationships and friendships and actually borderline affects all aspects of life.

What are the main borderline symptoms?

There are some borderline characteristics by which you can recognise that someone has borderline. Friendships and relationships are very difficult for borderline people. You are often full of distrust and this does not help a friendship or relationship. On top of that, you also have to deal with very strong emotions and this makes you repel people. Especially the anger outbursts can be very intense and often there is no reason for them at all. With borderline, you can sometimes be reckless. This makes you a danger to yourself and to others. For example by driving too fast on purpose, taking an overdose or sometimes a borderline commits self-mutilation. Practice has shown that people with borderline often have another personality disorder. Borderline disorder can also result from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What are the causes of borderline personality disorder?

The cause of a borderline disorder is usually a combination of psychological, social and biological factors. Borderline is often hereditary. If it runs in the family, you also have an increased chance of being affected. You may also be predisposed, in which case you are more susceptible to getting borderline. One very common symptom for people with borderline is that they have experienced a very harrowing event in their childhood. For example, sexual abuse or mistreatment. It is then literally a bad childhood, combined with a trauma that causes the borderline. Therefore, not only the borderline has to be dealt with, but also the trauma.

A borderline treatment

There are various treatments for borderline disease. Cognitive behavioural therapy is often used for borderline patients. This directly tackles the borderline. But what if borderline arises from a traumatic experience? Then it is better to treat the source, the trauma, rather than the symptoms. When the trauma is dealt with, there is a greater chance that borderline symptoms will diminish or that you will have more success with a specific borderline treatment. For trauma treatment, EMDR therapy is very effective.

Borderline EMDR

EMDR therapy is a form of therapy for processing a trauma. When this is successful, the related symptoms often diminish or disappear altogether. This also applies if borderline has developed over the years through an unresolved trauma. EMDR is a good therapy for this. The therapy works on the basis of distraction at the moment of reliving the trauma. Distraction takes place in the traditional way with a hand gesture or a sound signal. When you are distracted, you do not remain stuck in the reliving of the trauma, but your thoughts are suddenly interrupted. By being repeatedly distracted from the trauma, you get used to bringing the trauma forward and putting it away when you want to. Your life is no longer controlled by the trauma and this will reduce many borderline symptoms.

Modern EMDR therapy with Psylaris

Psylaris is engaged in the development of modern tools for the mental healthcare sector. This way, the mental health care becomes easier to reach for those who need care and simpler for practitioners. For instance, Psylaris is working on virtual reality in the mental healthcare sector. Also an EMDR treatment can be done through virtual reality. The client wears VR glasses and is distracted in a very direct and intense way during the reliving of the trauma. For this purpose, Psylaris has worked with Psylaris Care a special VR Therapy module. It also allows the practitioner to set distraction tasks with their own pictures and videos. Psylaris has also developed an online platform with EMDR-Remote. Using this platform, the practitioner can give an EMDR treatment remotely. The platform provides a stable video connection and various digital possibilities to distract the client. The practitioner does not need to download any software, but can simply log in through the web browser and all data is stored on a secure server.

EMDR therapy with modern methods

As a developer of modern methods and tools in mental health care, Psylaris has also made EMDR easy with modern techniques. Virtual reality in healthcare is becoming increasingly important. With EMDR-VR, Psylaris has developed a VR module. The module can easily be used by the practitioner and has many distraction possibilities. The client gets a more intense distraction than during a regular treatment. The VR glasses can be used both at home and in the treatment room. This makes both the practitioner and the client more flexible.

If the client is unable to come to the treatment centre, Psylaris makes it possible to receive EMDR treatment at home with EMDR-remote. EMDR-remote is the online EMDR platform Psylaris, where the practitioner and the client can conduct an EMDR session via video telephony. Once again, the practitioner has many opportunities to be distracted and the client, who is chained to his home, can still receive treatment.
