Schizotypal personality disorder

When you are dealing with a schizotypal personality, you have a lot of trouble with the people around you. You are actually distrustful and suspicious of other people. Because of this, you will never be able to function well in a company. In fact, you suffer from not being able to control your emotions in company. As a schizotypal personality, you are seen by those around you as eccentric or weird.

What are the characteristics of schizotypal personality disorder?

The most important and striking feature of a schizotypal personality is its relationship with other people. Normally you meet people with an open mind and an open mind. This is not the case with someone with a schizotypal personality. You always have the impression that you are being judged by other people. This is not the case at all, but this is the person's way of thinking. Because they are always suspicious of other people, this sometimes manifests itself in strange behaviour. Not only the behaviour, but also the way of dressing and the appearance deviate from the norm.

Communicating with people

It goes without saying that, partly due to their strange way of communicating, people with schizotypal personality have great difficulty maintaining friendships and relationships. The vast majority of people with this disorder are not married and have few or no friends. Loneliness and social isolation are common, and alcohol and drug abuse are more prevalent than in other groups.

What treatment for schizotypal personality disorder?

Partly because of the distrust of others, someone with a schizotypal personality will not readily seek treatment. It is also difficult to find the cause of this behaviour. When the cause is clear, the best treatment can be determined. Certain psychotherapeutic treatments can be used to try to remove some of the suspicion. When the personality disorder is caused by an unresolved traumatic past, EMDR therapy is the most effective solution.

EMDR therapy for personality disorders

EMDR stands for "Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing" and involves reproducing an event, taking away the trauma. This happens on the basis of distraction. How exactly EMDR works in the brain is not yet scientifically known. However, good results are achieved and EMDR is recommended for trauma treatment. During the therapy, the client has to recall the trauma, including all additional feelings and thoughts, in his or her mind. In principle, the trauma has to be relived again, something you do not want. But at the moment of reliving, you are distracted by a hand gesture or a sound signal and other thoughts arise. You let go of the trauma for a moment. By repeating this, it will become easier each time to recall the trauma, and the strong emotions you feel will slowly disappear.

Better EMDR therapy with Psylaris

The founders of Psylaris have the goal of making mental health care more accessible to those who need it and more convenient for practitioners. With virtual reality, Psylaris has already modernised EMDR therapy. Instead of the traditional hand movement or sound signal during the distraction, the client sits with the VR glasses on, in the middle of the distraction that is started. Another advantage is that the VR goggles can be used at home and that the client can use them at home. EMDR-remote is possible. This is also the case with the online platform developed by Psylaris: EMDR-Remote. This is a secure environment, where you as a practitioner have the possibility to give an EMDR session remotely via video call. This is very suitable for clients who cannot or do not want to leave their home because of their symptoms. Through this online platform, the practitioner also has many opportunities to use online distraction tasks.

EMDR therapy with modern methods

As a developer of modern methods and tools in mental healthcare, Psylaris has also made EMDR easy with modern techniques. Virtual reality, for example, plays an increasingly important role in the GGZ. With EMDR-VR Psylaris has developed a VR module. The module can easily be used by the practitioner and has many distraction possibilities. The client gets a more intense distraction than during a regular treatment. The VR glasses can be used both at home and in the treatment room. This makes both the practitioner and the client more flexible. If the client is unable to come to the treatment centre, Psylaris makes it possible to receive EMDR treatment at home with EMDR-remote. EMDR-remote is the online EMDR platform of Psylaris, where the practitioner and the client can conduct an EMDR session via video calling. Again, the practitioner has many possibilities to distract and the client who is chained to the house is still being treated.
